“I’ve been around long enough to be an old sceptic about any new product, so we agreed a Mobilize trial using a single phone. Within a week, I said ‘we want it’ and ordered six more units.”
Vic Coles - Service Manager

Macair FMI

Macair FMI specialises in bespoke air conditioning and environmental systems and operates across the UK from its base at Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire. It has a number of major private and public sector clients including ICI Paints – the maker of Dulux – and Government departments.

The Challenge

At the cutting edge of the operation are seven mobile engineers attending calls up and down the country and expected to know instantly what hardware is where and its service history and status – a single site might have hundreds of units of different specification and manufacture.

Most control sensitive environments, so servicing, problems and down time must all be minimised. Previously, Macair engineers used PDAs to receive and log information and provide an information lifeline back to base.

But Service Manager Vic Coles found the PDA network via conventional comms technology and a bespoke head office hardware and software set-up was fragmented at best and at worst “drove us barmy”.

The Solution

MoCo was already a long term trusted supplier of Macair’s mobile phone system and Vic Coles recalls sitting in on an update meeting with MoCo representatives.

When Vic raised the PDA problem, MoCo’s Richard Pilton – the Systems Architect for Mobilize – suggested the new MoCo product as the answer to his prayers.

By using internet Cloud technology it could be ‘always on’ for communication between head office and engineer, except in extreme conditions.

Even if the signal was lost though, the handset would have logged necessary information for the job to continue and the engineer could input data or images to relay back automatically when the signal was restored.

A decision to ‘Go Mobilize’ would not junk existing head office hardware and entail massive new investment either - Mobilize would simply interface with Macair’s current set-up.

Nevertheless, with fingers still burning from the PDA experience and aware that Mobilize had only just been launched, Vic Coles admitted: “I’ve been around long enough to be an old sceptic about any new product, so we agreed a Mobilize trial using a single phone. “Within a week, I said ‘we want it’ and ordered six more units.”
